KAL Disney Blanket FAQ

FAQ
Back To Basics
1. What is the KAL Disney Blanket?
This is a year long mystery knit a long with a Disney Princess theme!  Every week I will reveal a new square with a link to the pattern chart.  The blanket has 4 "official" sizes with specific characters for each size.  However, you are not limited to an "official" size or set of characters - please feel free to mix and match to create a blanket perfect for you!  There will be 63 blanket squares revealed during the course of this KAL which means some weeks will reveal more than one square.  Head on over to the Introduction Post to find out more!

2. Do I have to pay to play?
No way!  Everything is completely free.  This will stay true for all of the squares and for the entire year - I promise!

Let's Talk Yarn (and other tools)
1. What type of yarn do I need?
I will be using this blanket as a de-stash.  I will not be purchasing anything in order to make the blanket.  That being said, it's hard for me to tell you exactly what you should buy.  I recommend shopping your stash first and seeing what you can find!  I will be keeping my yarn at a worsted weight (or similar) so that should help you decide.

2. How about needles?
Yup!  You'll need those too.  I'm using US size 8.

3. Do I have to use the same colors as you?
Absolutely not!  Feel free to change out colors and make it your own.  I've picked colors based on the characters costumes and such but if you decide someone who usually wears a blue dress would look great wearing something else go for it.

Tips on Techniques
1. I'm not good at color work.  Can I still play?
Please do!  Each square will have three different charts representing three different levels: easy, medium, and hard.  You can decide which chart to use to practice your skills!  Some characters even include a bonus "costume" chart (learn more about that in the "All About Those Squares" section.)

2. Do you have a system for how you categorize a chart as easy, medium, or hard?
Yup!  And here's how it goes:
Easy: These squares take no more than 5 different colors to complete.  Any given row will not use more than 3 colors.
Medium: These squares take no more than 6 different colors to complete.  Any given row will not use more than 4 colors.
Hard: These squares take no more than 7 different colors to complete.  Any given row will not use more than 5 colors.
NOTE: These numbers represent the maximum.  Some squares may use less colors than the max for their category.  The same is true for rows.

3. What type of color work technique should I use?
I am using stranded color work.  It's what I'm most comfortable with.  But feel free to use whatever is easiest for you!  Double knitting, intarsia, stranded, some random technique you created yourself.  Anything will work.

4. I crochet...does this mean I can't join?
No way!  If you can follow a color work chart for crochet please play along.  I'd love to see crochet versions.

All About Those Squares
1. Where can I find a list of all the released squares?
I will be keeping a running list of all the squares under the KAL Disney Blanket Squares tab.

2. Which characters will be included for the KAL?
I can't answer this one!  It's classified information.  I'd really like to keep a mysterious aspect to this KAL so all I will tell you is that 16 Disney Princesses will be represented (if you count them all that's enough for every Disney princess plus a few additional female characters), most will have a prince/companion and a villain from the movie, and then a few will have additional characters.

3. What is a "costume" chart?
As an example: for the princesses I used the easy skill level and took out the skin tone so you are left with a costume for that character.  Not all of the characters will have this bonus category but all of the princesses will (along with some of the other characters).

4. I really like aspects from two or more of the charts for [insert character name here].  Do I have to chose one chart or can I mix and match from them all?
Feel free to make the charts your own!  We're all here to have fun.  If you don't want to be limited to one chart feel free to use your favorite aspects from all the charts for that character.

Miscellaneous and Other Shenanigans
1. I have a question you didn't answer...
Feel free to shoot me an e-mail or message me on Ravelry.

NOTE: Please do not sell any of these charts or products made from these charts.  I neither own nor claim to own the licensing for any of these characters.
